Coding as a New Literacy

Coding as a New Literacy: Insights from Prof. Marina Umaschi Bers

At KB-TK Santo Agustinus, we believe that preparing children for the future means giving them the right tools to express themselves. This is why our Coding Program is not just about computers—it is about a "New Literacy." Our approach is deeply inspired by the groundbreaking research of Prof. Marina Umaschi Bers, a world-renowned expert in developmental technologies.

Why Coding for Early Childhood?

According to Prof. Bers, coding is far more than a technical skill; it is a way of thinking. In her research, she highlights that coding should be treated like a second language—a tool for children to communicate their ideas and create their own stories.

Here are the core benefits of early coding based on her research:

  • Computational Thinking: Children learn to break down complex problems into smaller, logical steps.

  • Coding as Playground (Not Playpen): Prof. Bers emphasizes that technology should be a "playground" where children are free to create, explore, and collaborate, rather than a "playpen" that limits their movement.

  • The "Positive Technological Development" (PTD) Framework: Coding fosters six key positive behaviors: Communication, Collaboration, Community Building, Content Creation, Creativity, and Choice of Conduct.

Coding at KB-TK Santo Agustinus

Aligned with Prof. Bers’ philosophy, our TK-A and TK-B students engage in coding through play. We use simple, puzzle-based logic where children give instructions to characters to reach a goal. This method ensures that:

  1. Logical Reasoning: Children understand cause and effect.

  2. Creative Confidence: There are many ways to solve a "code," allowing every child’s unique talent to shine.

  3. Character Building: Following our SMART philosophy, children learn persistence and "Adaptability" when a code needs to be fixed.

Building Character for Life

By introducing coding early, we are not just teaching children how to use a tablet; we are teaching them how to be the creators of their own digital world. As Prof. Bers says, coding is a "palette for the mind."

We are proud to bring this world-class educational insight to our students at KB-TK Santo Agustinus, ensuring they grow into innovative, reflective, and future-ready leaders.

Prof. Bers: "Coding is the new literacy of the 21st century."
